One of the earliest settlements within San Luis Obispo County, Templeton was founded in 1886 when C. H. Phillips of the West Coast Land Company sent out a survey team, south of what is now Paso Robles. This land was to be divided into business and residential lots of 5-12 acres. Phillips initially named the town "Crocker" after the financier of the project, but when he found out there was already a town with that name, he decided on "Templeton" after Crocker's son.

Unfortunately, Phillips' plan did not take off as he anticipated and he sold very few properties. Eventually, a railroad was built on the main highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and Templeton became the last stop for passengers coming up from the north. Travelers would then board a stagecoach and continue on south to San Luis Obispo.

Because of this positioning, as the final stop before your destination, Templeton grew into the place where travelers would 'kick up their heels' and otherwise act irresponsibly. Templeton became quite well known for its saloon brawls and wild street scenes.

However, in 1891, the railroad continued south and the "party" went with it. Then, in 1897, a great fire burned down most of the town. When the town was rebuilt, it developed into the town it is today, a small, friendly place with a strong community spirit and an appreciation for its colorful past. Many of the damaged buildings were restored to original and are still in use today. New buildings are being designed to stay in character with what was once truly the "wild west".

The topography of Templeton ranges from semi-flat to hilly with clusters of oak trees. You'll find many horse ranches and vineyards on the roads winding through the neighboring hills. Heavy production of almonds, cherries, apples, grains and dairy products are featured here. The most rapidly increasing product is grapes for the surrounding wineries.

At an elevation of 721 feet above sea level, Templeton has a Mediterranean climate that is characterized by mild winters and dry summers. The area usually has low humidity. Rain generally falls only between November and March, with the rainy season tapering off almost completely by the end of April.

You will find people gathered at the downtown park for Farmers' Market on Saturdays, or for evening concerts in the summer. As one of SLO County's main wine-making regions, Templeton is a popular destination for California's fine cuisine paired with local wines. Home to many horse ranches; roping competitions and prestigious horse shows are hosted here each year. Antique shops, gift stores, and other services round out the offerings of the very charming Main Street business district.

Real Estate:

Templeton is one of three unincorporated areas in San Luis Obispo County that has land available for development. Rental units are on the increase and Templeton maintains a nearly zero vacancy factor. Several housing developments are under various stages of construction, and desirable properties are being subdivided into 1 to 10 acre lots with many attractive features, including horse privileges.

While still a small rural town, Templeton is the fastest growing community in San Luis Obispo County, with developers competing against vineyards for prime land. Yet, growth has not changed the fact that Templeton is a slice of the old west. Driving through the town you will still find businesses that served the ranching and agriculture community since the railroad moved on, over a hundred years ago.

Templeton is an ideal place to raise a family or grow a business. The countryside is gorgeous; the hospitality and small town qualities that you've been looking for are right here in Templeton!
