Creston was originally
founded by local ranchers in 1884. The origin of name can be traced
to one of the town's four founders, Thomas Cressi. Large ranches still
surround the tiny town, and bring the population total up to about 1600.
The town itself contains around 250 residents. The wide-open, rural character
of the area makes it a popular destination for tourists and bicyclists,
and a natural choice for the Western States' annual Wildflower
Bicycle Ride each
spring. Sunday brunch at The Loading Chute restaurant is a must.
Famous residents past and
present: country singer, Monte Mills, of the Lucky Horse Show Band; Jeopardy
game show host Alex Trebek, who also owns the Creston Vineyard; and L.
Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology.

"You know
your neighbors, and it feels safe here; they're nice people."
"It's a small town, and it's comfortable. That's
why we moved here. We have small kids, and we moved here because
of the school system and the small-town atmosphere."
"The people are the
best part. Everybody's friendly."
"There's no stress here.
Not too many problems."
"It's peaceful, and you're close to
all the things that San Luis Obispo offers."
"Taxes are a little cheaper.
It's a nice, friendly place to live."
Creston is a place where residents want to keep the town the way it is:
a tiny, close-knit, genuinely supportive community. Continuing legislative
efforts create architectural design guidelines for Creston, which protect
the rural character of the area against increasing development and attempts
to subdivide large agricultural parcels.
The beautiful countryside of Creston is world renown for world
class Cabernet Sauvignon, along with other small lot productions that exhibit
intense varietal character, and demonstrate Creston's commitment to "no compromise"
quality.

the Atascadero school system, although there were many in the community
who wished to remain independent and operate their own school. Upper
grade classes were bussed into Atascadero. In 1979, a sixth grade teacher
was hired, and Creston School became a K-6 school, with a student population
